What is thermocouple calibration?

Thermocouple calibration at Labcal

Thermocouple calibration compares the temperature indicated by a thermocouple, on its own or with its indicator, with a traceable reference thermometer at controlled temperatures. The certificate shows the actual error at each point, so you can apply corrections or confirm the sensor is still within tolerance.

Thermocouples are robust, but their wires change with heat, handling and time. Contamination and changes along the wire shift the output in ways no display will warn you about, and a small offset across a production run adds up quickly.

Labcal calibrates thermocouple probes and thermocouple thermometers across -30°C to +140°C under UKAS Lab 0625. If your thermocouple also works above that range, contact us and we will advise on the right approach.

Instruments we calibrate

  • Thermocouple probes (common types)
  • Handheld thermocouple thermometers
  • Thermocouples with indicators
  • Food and surface thermocouple probes
  • Thermocouple data loggers
  • Thermocouple transmitters

If your instrument is not listed, contact us and we will confirm suitability.

Where two metals meet

A few microvolts between a pass and a fail

A thermocouple produces a tiny voltage at the junction of two different metals, and that voltage changes with temperature. Your thermometer turns it into a reading, and calibration tells you how close that reading is to the truth.

We compare your thermocouple with our traceable reference at the temperatures you work at, with the indicator if you use one, so the certificate matches how you measure.

How it works

From your bench to a UKAS certificate

01

Send it in

Courier your instruments to our Lymington laboratory, or ask us to arrange collection for larger batches.

02

Compared with our reference

Your thermocouple is compared with our traceable reference thermometer at each point you need, from -30°C to +140°C.

03

Certificate back

A UKAS certificate with results and measurement uncertainty at every point. Average 7 working days, 3-day fast-track by arrangement.

Why it matters

Why thermocouples need regular checks

Evidence for your quality system

ISO 9001 and GMP expect traceable measurement equipment. A UKAS certificate gives your auditor that evidence.

Probe and instrument as one

Calibrating the thermocouple with its indicator shows the error you actually see in use.

Quick return

Average 7 working days, with a 3-day fast-track by arrangement.

Industries Served

Who needs thermocouple calibration?

Thermocouples are used for process, food, laboratory and manufacturing temperature checks.

Accreditation

Labcal is independently accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. Our UKAS temperature certificates are accepted by audit teams across regulated industries.

Common Questions

Questions about this calibration service

Straight answers to what quality managers and engineers ask most before sending instruments to Labcal.

What is thermocouple calibration?

Thermocouple calibration compares the temperature indicated by a thermocouple, alone or with its indicator, with a traceable reference thermometer at controlled temperatures. The certificate records the error and measurement uncertainty at each point. UKAS accreditation means the laboratory has been independently assessed against ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

Can you calibrate thermocouples above +140°C?

Our UKAS-accredited temperature calibration covers -30°C to +140°C. If your thermocouple is used at higher temperatures, contact us and we will advise on whether your requirement can be accommodated.

Should I calibrate the thermocouple and the meter separately?

If the thermocouple is always used with the same thermometer, calibrating them together gives the most useful result, because it reflects the reading you see. If you swap probes between instruments, separate calibration may suit you better. We can advise when you request a quote.

How often should thermocouples be calibrated?

Annual calibration is common. Thermocouples used at higher temperatures, in harsh environments or for critical measurements may drift faster and need shorter intervals, set by your quality management system.
