What is temperature probe calibration?

Temperature probe and PRT calibration at Labcal

Temperature probe calibration compares a probe’s reading with a traceable reference thermometer at controlled temperatures. For platinum resistance thermometers (PRTs) and RTDs, it shows the actual error at each point so you can correct readings or confirm the probe is still within tolerance.

Probes drift quietly. Thermal cycling, vibration and moisture change the sensor, and the display still looks perfectly confident. In GMP storage, food safety checks and process control, that drift is exactly what an auditor wants evidence about.

Labcal calibrates probes, PRTs and RTDs with or without their indicators across -30°C to +140°C under UKAS Lab 0625, with single or multi-point calibration and adjustment where the instrument allows.

Instruments we calibrate

  • Platinum resistance thermometers (PRTs)
  • Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs, Pt100)
  • Digital probe thermometers
  • Food and process probes
  • Temperature transmitters with probes
  • Temperature indicators and controllers

If your instrument is not listed, contact us and we will confirm suitability.

Side by side with the reference

Same bath, same moment, one honest number

Your probe and our reference thermometer sit together in a stable, controlled temperature source. Once both have settled, we compare the readings at each point and record the difference with its measurement uncertainty.

Choose the points that matter to you, such as a cold store at -20°C, ambient and a process at +121°C, and we will calibrate there.

How it works

From your bench to a UKAS certificate

01

Send it in

Courier your instruments to our Lymington laboratory, or ask us to arrange collection for larger batches.

02

Compared with our reference

Your probe is compared with our traceable reference thermometer at each temperature you need, from -30°C to +140°C.

03

Certificate back

A UKAS certificate with results and measurement uncertainty at every point. Average 7 working days, 3-day fast-track by arrangement.

Why it matters

What probe drift puts at risk

GMP and food safety evidence

Storage, sterilisation and HACCP records rely on the probe. A UKAS certificate shows the readings are right.

Traceable to national standards

Results trace through our UKAS-accredited reference thermometers to national measurement standards.

Average 7 working days

With a 3-day fast-track by arrangement when a probe is needed back for an audit or validation.

Industries Served

Who needs temperature probe calibration?

Temperature probes underpin product quality and safety across regulated industries.

Accreditation

UKAS Lab 0625  ·  ISO/IEC 17025:2017

Labcal is independently accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. Our UKAS temperature certificates are accepted by audit teams across regulated industries.

Common Questions

Questions about this calibration service

Straight answers to what quality managers and engineers ask most before sending instruments to Labcal.

What is the difference between a PRT and a thermocouple?

A PRT or RTD measures temperature from the change in electrical resistance of a platinum element, and is usually more stable and accurate. A thermocouple measures the small voltage produced where two different metals meet, and suits wider ranges. Labcal calibrates both within -30°C to +140°C.

Do you calibrate the probe and the indicator together?

Yes, and for most users that is the best option, because the certificate then reflects the reading you see on the display. We can also calibrate a probe on its own where you use it with different instruments. Tell us how the probe is used when you request a quote.

What temperature range do you cover?

Our UKAS-accredited temperature calibration covers -30°C to +140°C. If you need points outside that range, contact us and we will advise on whether your requirement can be accommodated.

How often should temperature probes be calibrated?

Annual calibration is common for probes used in GMP storage, food safety and process control. Probes used in critical applications, or showing drift between calibrations, may need shorter intervals set by your quality management system.
