What is gas and air flow calibration?
Gas And Air Flow Calibration at Labcal
Gas and air flow calibration is the process of comparing a gas flow meter or controller’s output against a traceable reference flow standard to establish the actual flow error and measurement uncertainty across the required range and for the specified gas. Labcal performs gas flow calibration within its UKAS-accredited laboratory, covering a range from 0.025 mL/min to 13,000 L/min across multiple gas types.
Labcal provides single and multi-point gas flow calibration for mass and volumetric flow meters, sensors and associated displays. We cover ultra-low flow through to high-flow gas calibration, supporting both modern and legacy instruments across laboratory, industrial and process environments.

Common Questions
Questions about gas and air flow calibration
Answers to what quality managers and procurement teams ask most before choosing a UKAS calibration provider for gas and air flow calibration.
What is UKAS gas flow calibration?
UKAS gas flow calibration means your gas flow meter or controller is calibrated by a laboratory independently assessed and accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The calibration establishes the actual flow error and measurement uncertainty at defined points across the required flow range, using a reference standard traceable to national measurement standards.
What flow range does Labcal cover for gas calibration?
Labcal’s UKAS-accredited gas flow calibration covers a range of 0.025 mL/min to 13,000 L/min. This covers ultra-low flow instruments used in laboratory and analytical applications through to high-flow industrial instruments. If your instrument falls outside this range, contact us and we will advise on suitability.
What gases can Labcal calibrate flow meters with?
Labcal calibrates gas flow instruments using air, argon, carbon dioxide, helium, oxygen and nitrogen. Calibration results are specific to the gas used. If a flow meter calibrated on air is to be used with a different gas, a gas conversion factor must be applied. We can advise on multi-gas calibration and conversion requirements for your specific instrument and application.
How often should gas flow meters be calibrated?
In pharmaceutical manufacturing and other GMP-regulated environments, annual calibration is commonly adopted. For instruments used in environmental sampling or occupational hygiene, the calibration interval is often dictated by the applicable regulatory protocol and may require calibration before and after each sampling campaign. For general laboratory use, annual intervals are typical depending on the criticality of the measurement.
Does gas flow meter calibration need to be UKAS-accredited?
In regulated industries, UKAS accreditation is the expected standard for externally calibrated flow instruments. ISO 9001:2015, GMP guidelines and environmental monitoring frameworks all require measurement traceability, and UKAS accreditation is the recognised route to demonstrating that traceability. Labcal holds UKAS accreditation for gas flow calibration under Lab 0625.
