What is wind tunnel calibration?

Wind tunnel calibration at Labcal

Wind tunnel calibration places an air velocity instrument in a controlled, stable airstream and compares its reading with a traceable reference velocity. It is the foundation of every UKAS air velocity certificate we issue, from handheld anemometers to reference instruments used by other laboratories.

Air velocity is hard to measure well. Turbulence, temperature and how the instrument sits in the flow all affect the result. A well-characterised wind tunnel removes those variables, so the only thing left to measure is the instrument.

Labcal operates multiple wind tunnels on site, covering 0.1 to 50 m/s under UKAS Lab 0625. For instruments that need lower uncertainty than conventional methods allow, we offer Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) calibration as an option.

Instruments we calibrate

  • Vane anemometers
  • Hot wire and thermal anemometers
  • Pitot tubes
  • Velocity probes for multifunction meters
  • Air velocity transmitters
  • Reference instruments needing low uncertainty

If your instrument is not listed, contact us and we will confirm suitability.

Laser Doppler option

Two beams, one point, very low uncertainty

Laser Doppler Anemometry measures air speed without touching the flow. Two laser beams cross at a point in the airstream, and tiny particles passing through that point scatter light at a frequency that depends on their speed.

Because nothing is placed in the flow, LDA gives a reference with very low measurement uncertainty. It suits reference instruments, research work and anywhere a standard calibration uncertainty is not tight enough.

How it works

From your bench to a UKAS certificate

01

Send it in

Courier your instruments to our Lymington laboratory, or ask us to arrange collection for larger batches.

02

Calibrated in a stable airstream

Your instrument is compared with our traceable reference in a controlled wind tunnel, with LDA available where lower uncertainty is needed.

03

Certificate back

A UKAS certificate with results and measurement uncertainty at every point. Average 7 working days, 3-day fast-track by arrangement.

Why it matters

Why the tunnel matters

Stable, characterised flow

A controlled test section removes turbulence and drift, so the certificate reflects the instrument rather than the conditions.

Traceable reference velocity

Results trace through UKAS-accredited reference standards, with LDA available for the lowest uncertainty.

Accepted by auditors and labs

Our UKAS certificates support regulated industries and other laboratories that need traceable reference instruments.

Labcal is independently accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. Our UKAS air velocity certificates are accepted by audit teams and calibration laboratories alike.

Common Questions

Questions about this calibration service

Straight answers to what quality managers and engineers ask most before sending instruments to Labcal.

What is LDA calibration?

Laser Doppler Anemometry is a non-contact optical technique for measuring air velocity. Two laser beams cross at a point in the airstream, and particles passing through scatter light at a frequency proportional to their speed. Labcal offers LDA calibration as an option where lower uncertainty is needed than conventional wind tunnel methods give.

What velocity range do your wind tunnels cover?

Our UKAS-accredited air velocity calibration covers 0.1 to 50 m/s across multiple wind tunnels. If your instrument needs calibrating outside that range, contact us and we will advise on whether it can be accommodated.

When do I need LDA rather than a standard calibration?

Standard wind tunnel calibration suits most handheld and fixed anemometers. LDA is worth considering for reference instruments used to calibrate others, research measurements and any application where the standard calibration uncertainty is not tight enough for your requirement.

Can you calibrate large or unusual air velocity instruments?

Often, yes. With multiple wind tunnels on site we can accommodate a wide range of instrument sizes and types. Send us the make, model and dimensions and we will confirm suitability before you ship.
