What is pitot tube calibration?

Pitot tube calibration at Labcal

A pitot tube measures air speed from the difference between total and static pressure in a moving airstream. Calibration places the tube in a controlled wind tunnel and compares the velocity it indicates with a traceable reference, so you know how the tube behaves across the speeds you measure.

Pitot tubes are simple, but a dented tip, a blocked static hole or a bent stem changes the pressure the tube sees. In duct traverses, stack testing and ventilation audits that error flows straight into every flow rate you report.

Labcal calibrates pitot-static tubes and S-type pitots in multiple wind tunnels across our 0.1 to 50 m/s UKAS air velocity scope. We confirm the reporting format you need, such as velocity error or tube coefficient, when we quote.

Instruments we calibrate

  • Pitot-static tubes (L-type)
  • S-type pitot tubes
  • Ellipsoidal-nose pitot tubes
  • Pitot tubes with integrated temperature probes
  • Pitot tubes paired with digital manometers
  • Pitot tubes for stack and duct testing

If your instrument is not listed, contact us and we will confirm suitability.

Pressure into velocity

The tip sees the wind, the manometer tells the truth

Air arriving at the tip of a pitot tube stops, and its pressure rises above the static pressure along the stem. That difference is what your manometer reads and what your velocity is calculated from.

We calibrate the tube in the airstream it was designed for, so the certificate reflects the tube’s real behaviour rather than a theoretical coefficient. If you use the tube with a particular manometer, send them together.

How it works

From your bench to a UKAS certificate

01

Send it in

Courier your instruments to our Lymington laboratory, or ask us to arrange collection for larger batches.

02

Calibrated in the airstream

Your tube is mounted in the wind tunnel and compared with our traceable reference velocity at the points you need.

03

Certificate back

A UKAS certificate with results and measurement uncertainty at every point. Average 7 working days, 3-day fast-track by arrangement.

Why it matters

Why pitot tubes need calibrating

Stack and duct results that hold

Emissions and ventilation flow rates depend on the tube. A UKAS certificate supports the numbers you submit.

Your tube, not a textbook value

S-type tubes in particular vary from unit to unit. Calibration tells you how your tube behaves, not how one should.

Fast turnaround

Average 7 working days, with a 3-day fast-track by arrangement for testing teams on tight schedules.

Industries Served

Who needs pitot tube calibration?

Pitot tubes are used for duct traverses, stack testing and ventilation checks across industrial and regulated sites.

Accreditation

UKAS Lab 0625  ·  ISO/IEC 17025:2017

Labcal is independently accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. Our UKAS pitot tube certificates are accepted by audit teams across regulated industries.

Common Questions

Questions about this calibration service

Straight answers to what quality managers and engineers ask most before sending instruments to Labcal.

What is pitot tube calibration?

Pitot tube calibration compares the velocity indicated by the tube with a traceable reference velocity in a controlled wind tunnel. The results show how the tube performs at each calibrated point, with the measurement uncertainty. UKAS accreditation means the laboratory has been independently assessed against ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

Can you calibrate S-type pitot tubes for stack testing?

Yes. We calibrate S-type pitot tubes as well as pitot-static tubes. S-type tubes are often used for stack emissions testing, where the tube’s own coefficient matters. Tell us the method you work to and the points you need and we will confirm the calibration when we quote.

Should I send my manometer with the pitot tube?

If you always use the tube with the same digital manometer, send both. Calibrating them as a pair gives a certificate that reflects the velocity readings you actually take. If you swap manometers, we can calibrate the tube on its own.

How often should a pitot tube be calibrated?

Annual calibration is common for pitot tubes used in regulated stack testing and ventilation audits. Inspect the tube before each use for dents, blocked holes or a bent stem, and send it for calibration straight away if it has been damaged.
