What is vane anemometer calibration?

Vane anemometer calibration at Labcal

A vane anemometer measures air speed from the rotation of a small propeller or vane wheel. Calibration compares the instrument’s reading with a traceable reference velocity in a controlled wind tunnel, so you know the actual error at each point across the range you use.

Vane anemometers are the workhorse of HVAC commissioning, fume cupboard testing and cleanroom air change checks. Bearings wear, vanes collect dust and small knocks bend blades, and each one shifts the reading with no visible sign. A UKAS calibration puts a number on that drift before an auditor or a commissioning report does.

Labcal calibrates handheld and probe-mounted vane anemometers in multiple wind tunnels on site, with single or multi-point calibration and adjustment where the instrument allows it.

Instruments we calibrate

  • Handheld vane anemometers
  • Vane probes for multifunction meters
  • Large-diameter vane heads for duct and grille work
  • Small-diameter vane probes
  • Vane anemometers with temperature measurement
  • Data-logging vane anemometers

If your instrument is not listed, contact us and we will confirm suitability.

Inside the wind tunnel

Every blade, every point, against a traceable reference

We mount your anemometer in the test section and step the tunnel through the points you need. At each point the vane reading is logged against our reference velocity, and the difference goes on your certificate with its measurement uncertainty.

Tell us the points your procedures call for, such as fume cupboard face velocities around 0.5 m/s, and we will calibrate there.

How it works

From your bench to a UKAS certificate

01

Send it in

Courier your instruments to our Lymington laboratory, or ask us to arrange collection for larger batches.

02

Calibrated in the wind tunnel

Your vane is compared with our traceable reference velocity at each point you need, across our 0.1 to 50 m/s UKAS scope.

03

Certificate back

A UKAS certificate with results and measurement uncertainty at every point. Average 7 working days, 3-day fast-track by arrangement.

Why it matters

What a drifting vane costs you

Audit-ready evidence

Fume cupboard and cleanroom tests are only as good as the anemometer behind them. A UKAS certificate answers the first question an auditor asks.

Returned to you, quickly

Average 7 working days, with a 3-day fast-track by arrangement when a commissioning deadline will not move.

Traceable to national standards

Every result traces through our UKAS-accredited reference standards, so your readings hold up in a report.

Industries Served

Who needs vane anemometer calibration?

Vane anemometers support ventilation, containment and environmental work across regulated sites.

Accreditation

Labcal is independently accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. Our UKAS vane anemometer certificates are accepted by audit teams across regulated industries.

Common Questions

Questions about this calibration service

Straight answers to what quality managers and engineers ask most before sending instruments to Labcal.

What is vane anemometer calibration?

Vane anemometer calibration compares the instrument’s air speed reading with a traceable reference velocity in a controlled wind tunnel. The certificate records the reading error and measurement uncertainty at each calibrated point. UKAS accreditation means the laboratory has been independently assessed against ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

What velocity range can you calibrate vane anemometers over?

Our UKAS-accredited air velocity calibration covers 0.1 to 50 m/s. Most vane anemometers are calibrated across part of that range, chosen to match how the instrument is used. Tell us the points you need and we will confirm them when we quote.

How often should a vane anemometer be calibrated?

Annual calibration is common for anemometers used in fume cupboard testing, cleanroom verification and HVAC commissioning. Your quality system should set the interval based on how critical the measurement is and how much the instrument has drifted between calibrations.

Can you calibrate the vane probe and the meter together?

Yes. Where a vane probe plugs into a multifunction meter, we calibrate the probe and meter as a pair so the certificate reflects the readings you actually take. Send both, and tell us the serial numbers you want on the certificate.
