What is hot wire anemometer calibration?

Hot wire and thermal anemometer calibration at Labcal

Hot wire and thermal anemometers measure air speed from the cooling of a heated sensor. They respond well at low velocities, which is why they are used for laminar flow cabinets, cleanrooms and fume cupboard work. Calibration compares the reading with a traceable reference velocity in a controlled wind tunnel.

Thermal sensors are delicate. Contamination, a damaged element or ageing electronics all shift the reading, and the low speeds these probes are used for leave little margin. UKAS calibration shows exactly how far the probe reads from the reference at each point you rely on.

Labcal calibrates hot wire and thermal probes, telescopic probes and multifunction meters in multiple wind tunnels, with single or multi-point calibration across our 0.1 to 50 m/s UKAS scope.

Instruments we calibrate

  • Hot wire anemometers
  • Thermal (hot bead and hot film) anemometers
  • Telescopic thermal velocity probes
  • Thermal probes for multifunction meters
  • Thermoanemometers with temperature measurement
  • Velocity transmitters with thermal sensors

If your instrument is not listed, contact us and we will confirm suitability.

Low speed, high stakes

Where a few centimetres per second decide a pass or a fail

Laminar flow cabinets and unidirectional cleanroom air are often specified around 0.45 m/s, so a small error matters. We calibrate thermal probes at the low velocities you test at, not just the easy points in the middle of the range.

Probes are mounted in the tunnel in the orientation they are designed for, and each point is logged against our traceable reference.

How it works

From your bench to a UKAS certificate

01

Send it in

Courier your instruments to our Lymington laboratory, or ask us to arrange collection for larger batches.

02

Calibrated at low velocity

Your probe is compared with our traceable reference at the points you test at, including the low speeds cleanrooms depend on.

03

Certificate back

A UKAS certificate with results and measurement uncertainty at every point. Average 7 working days, 3-day fast-track by arrangement.

Why it matters

Why thermal probes need regular calibration

Cleanroom evidence that stands up

Airflow checks support GMP and ISO 14644 cleanroom classification. A UKAS certificate shows the probe behind those readings is right.

Minimal downtime

Average 7 working days, with a 3-day fast-track by arrangement, so validation schedules keep moving.

One lab for the whole kit

Calibrate thermal probes alongside temperature, humidity and pressure instruments under one UKAS schedule.

Industries Served

Who needs hot wire anemometer calibration?

Thermal anemometers are used wherever low air speeds need proving, from cleanrooms to research labs.

Accreditation

UKAS Lab 0625  ·  ISO/IEC 17025:2017

Labcal is independently accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. Our UKAS thermal anemometer certificates are accepted by audit teams across regulated industries.

Common Questions

Questions about this calibration service

Straight answers to what quality managers and engineers ask most before sending instruments to Labcal.

What is the difference between a hot wire and a vane anemometer?

A vane anemometer measures air speed from the rotation of a vane wheel, while a hot wire or thermal anemometer measures the cooling effect of moving air on a heated sensor. Thermal probes respond better at low velocities and fit into small openings. Both need calibration against a traceable reference velocity.

Can you calibrate thermal anemometers at low air speeds?

Yes. Our UKAS-accredited air velocity calibration starts at 0.1 m/s, which covers the low velocities used for laminar flow cabinets and cleanroom checks. Tell us the points you need and we will confirm them when we quote.

Do thermal anemometers need calibrating more often than vane types?

Thermal sensors are more easily affected by contamination and handling, so some users choose shorter intervals for probes used in critical cleanroom work. Annual calibration is the common baseline, with the interval set by your quality system and the probe’s drift history.

Should I send the probe and the meter?

Yes, where the probe is detachable. Calibrating the probe and meter together means the certificate reflects the readings you take in use. Include any extension rods or cables that are part of normal use.
